2-Year-Olds

Busy Boxcars

Two-year-olds are in full motion, and our classroom is built to keep up with them.

Two is a remarkable age. Children at this stage are in the middle of what researchers call the "language explosion," a period when vocabulary grows at a staggering rate and children begin combining words into simple sentences. Our Busy Boxcars classroom is designed to fuel that growth through rich, language-saturated experiences every single day.

We read aloud constantly. We narrate, describe, question, and respond. We sing songs, tell stories, and create opportunities for children to use language in meaningful ways. Research shows that the number and quality of words children hear in their early years directly predicts their reading ability years later, and we take that seriously.

Two-year-olds are also discovering independence and testing limits. This is developmentally normal and healthy. Our teachers are trained to support autonomy while providing the gentle, consistent boundaries that help children feel safe. We use co-regulation strategies to help children name and manage their emotions, laying the groundwork for the self-regulation skills they'll need in school.

Fine motor development is a priority in this classroom. Puzzles, stacking toys, playdough, simple art materials, and self-care tasks like zipping and pouring all build the hand strength and coordination that children will need for writing in the years ahead.
